The memorial will open to the general public in May

12 May 2024 The Museum of Romani Culture will open its new branch  "Lety u Písku. Memorial to the Holocaust of Roma and Sinti in Bohemia" – in May 2024. It will thus reach an important milestone in the history of the Czech Roma and Sinti.

Years of intensive efforts to commemorate the victims of the Romani and Sinti Holocaust in a dignified manner at the site of the former concentration camp in Lety are reaching their peak. The Museum of Romani Culture has had the large-scale pig farm that was built on the site of the suffering razed to the ground and will build a new Memorial in the area during 2023 and 2024.

It is a place of remembrance and knowledge. Its idea is to commemorate the memory of those imprisoned directly at the site of the suffering, to inform and educate about what happened before and during World War II and about the impact of the Nazi genocide on the Roma communities in the Czech lands.

The Memorial includes a new place of remembrance and a Visitor Centre with a permanent exhibition Memory of Place and Place of Memory. The latter uses authentic memories of witnesses to bring the historical context and the pain of individuals to the attention of visitors, and also provides material testimony about the Czech Roma and Sinti imprisoned in the camp.

Thanks to the outdoor permanent exhibition - the Trail of Memory - the Memorial will then fulfil its educational function all year round.

The Memorial to the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti in Bohemia will open to the public for the first time on Sunday 12 May 2024 - the same day as the traditional commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti at the emergency burial site in the immediate vicinity of the Memorial. Visitors to the commemoration will be able to take tours of the Memorial's grounds, including both of its exhibitions.
