The Cultural Heritage Monument at Lety u Písku

On 13 May 1995, in the presence of then-Czech President Václav Havel, a stone memorial reading “Ma bisteren – nezapomeňte” ("Never Forget”) was unveiled at what was presumed to have been part of the former camp. The designer of the memorial, Zdeněk Hůla, said: “I used a fragment of a sphere which is missing one part at its base. A complete ideal sphere is a symbol of perfection and integrity, and every missing part disrupts its harmony, its beauty and its stability. I think that applies to human society as well.”

In 1998, part of that space was declared a national Cultural Heritage Monument. Replicas of the camp barracks were added to the space and a commemorative amphitheatre was built there. Since 2018, the Museum of Romani Culture has been administering the grounds.

Currently the Lety Cultural Heritage Monument is freely accessible to visitors (including Hůla’s memorial, the replica of the barracks, and the commemorative amphitheatre), together with a signed hiking trail dedicated to the former camp’s history.

The hiking trail begins in Lety municipality in front of the local authority office, passes by the upper edge of the current industrial pig farm grounds, i.e., past the former “Gypsy Camp”, to the Lety Cultural Heritage Monument. The signs inform hikers of the former camp’s history and about the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti in general. Museum historian Anna Míšková authored their texts.

In 2023 the connection to the Lety Cultural Heritage Monument will be provided through a Memory Trail which is part of the newly-constructed Memorial to the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti in Bohemia.
