Here we are

Where: Exhibition space of the Museum of Romani Culture, Bratislavská 67
When: From November 7, 2025

From November 7, the Museum of Romani Culture will host a photographic exhibition featuring two prominent figures in Czech documentary photography: Jan Mihaliček and Karel Cudlín.

Although at first glance the world of the Roma living in Prague's Žižkov district and those living in settlements in eastern Slovakia may seem very different, they are united by one profound experience – the majority does not perceive them as a full-fledged part of society. Nevertheless, their home exists – not in places, but in people who stick together, protect each other, and create their own safe environment where they find dignity and meaning.

Jan Mihaliček and Karel Cudlín, two prominent figures in Czech documentary photography and members of the prestigious 400 ASA association, have been capturing life in all its forms for decades – from political events to behind-the-scenes theater to the everyday lives of those whom few people are actually interested in.

Although the artists themselves are not Roma, they approach the Roma protagonists of their photographs with respect, patience, and genuine interest. It is clear that their photographs were not taken during fleeting and random visits, but documented an environment in which they were truly accepted and welcomed thanks to their genuine sympathy. This allowed them to view life in Roma communities from the inside – with respect and understanding.

The exhibition Here we are  not only offers an authentic picture of real life, but also inspires us to rethink our ideas about diversity and social inclusion. After all, it is humanity, respect, and a sense of belonging that create a true home.

The exhibition was created with the financial support of the City of Brno and is held under the auspices of Mayor Markéta Vaňková.
